Tanner Christensen guest posts for Sebastian’s Pamphlets....

What are you doing to make Internet marketing a better industry to be a part of? As it sits now: Internet marketing is one big popularity contest, and that’s not a good thing. Internet marketers are making it nearly impossible for the average person to find valuable content.

A good post although while worrying, concentrating on providing quality content will never be enough. It is fundamental, but up to each of us to improve other areas to better our arsenal in surviving and to prosper in this industry.

Thanks for all the feedback, and thanks to Sebastian for letting me harass his readers. It was a lot of fun.

Great post and it brings to light an unfortunate, but unavoidable point - as soon as people see there is money involved, suddenly any tactic goes - good or bad. That seems to be exactly what has happened with Search Engine Optimisation, and I don't doubt it will happen with social media as well.

All we can do is to keep producing great content and crossing our fingers that it will prevail!

I think it's an interesting topic Tanner brings up, but allow me to disagree.

Marketers are getting the majority share of attention and people who may have better quality content are not being seen.  This happens in every industry.  It's not the most useful products/services/content that thrive, it's those that are marketed the best (at least in the short term).  This could be a criticism of marketing as a whole, not just those that do it online.  And I think social networks allow more quality content to surface, not less.  Using Sphinn as an example, people search far and wide to find the best content they can in hopes that others will find it Sphinn worthy to genuinely help others and/or increase their status within the community.  I also don’t agree that to become involved in ‘real online communities’ will help foster a ‘universal feeling of online morals’.  And even if it did, I don’t think that would be a good thing.

The fact that people gave IgortheTroll -4 votes so far is not an example of Democracy but proof of what the article is saying.  He dared to critique... to get a "marketer" to liven things up a bit and some poor, sensitive b*stards couldn't handle his big 2.5 sentences.

Makes me want to see what he has to say all the more so it backfires.  I can see if it were unnecessarily rude but that wasn't the case.

The reason "internet marketers" are causing the community-at-large to suffer an internet version of A.D.D. is because, as Seth Godin, that famous blowhard, once said, "All marketers are liars."  They quote Napoleon Hill and all kinds of wise people without caring one whit about the well-being of the people to whom they "appear" to be ministering.

There are a lot of "wanna-bes" right here in our midst who sphinn what amounts to the same old garbage regularly... more "ways" to get traffic that have already been written about dozens of times, or yet another article on Pagerank's mysterious, cantankerous nature.  ZzzZzzZzzzz...

I do a unique article on Data Mining Twitter, mention it to Andy Beard, he Sphinns it, it goes hot.  I do the simple easy follow-up, Sphinn it myself and get like 7 Sphinns.

In other words, ITS YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT.  ALL OF YOU...

Now go give me my negative vote and IgortheTroll and I will see you all in hell. ;-)

Sam, thanks for backing me up, but who ever gave me -4 must have some hidden reasons for doing so.

I did not criticize tany, and I am sure English is not his native tounge.

I just said liven it up man!

And if we going to vote each other in and out based on some pointers and a little crituque, then we are doing a deservice to the SEO industry, because we are not enemies here, but working together for the same cause.

Tany keep up the good work!

I don't understand why tanyc01 has become the topic of discussion here, did I miss something?
