An oldie but goodie which i think will be more relevant to search as time goes on. Jim’s thinking always gets me thinking. I’m still trying to decide for myself what is best for me (and my clients) in terms of link building but Jim’s theories on search at least gets you thinking differently about generating links (other than playing the numbers game).

Wow, that really puts things into perspective. I would strongly recommend this article to anyone new to SEO - and those who still believe link farms are the key to success.

I'll agree that having the right links can make all the difference when ranking for keywords.

However, getting links from LINK FARMS or LINKS that google sees as valueless may not help your site, but they definately can't hurt you or get you banded UNLESS you link to these link farms.

Only link to quality sites, google knows quality sites link to quality sites. However, do not link to bad sites. Linking to link farms is like getting caught with a smoking gun in your hand. And yes that is how you get penalized by google.

If having bad links pointing to a website got it penalized, than all I have to do is creat bad links and point them to my compeditors to destroy their rankings.

Google's knows this, and is why a link can only be devalued and not inccur a penalty.

Getting links from quality sites is good, but as for 10 links beating 1000 well. You got to factor PR of those 10 links. You have to factor onpage SEO title, keywords, H1 and H2 tags. How many links are pointing at that page? How many links does the domain name have, how big is the website as big websites have stronger internal link structures for example amazon or REI.

Most product webpages have little to no links at all pointing at them, but REI has a ton links to its root domain, which makes the REI website domain itself have strong authority and hense it's own internal website links to it's product pages(which have no other links from other sites pointing to thise product pages)  totally  kicks the crap out of most compeditors for said keywords. Compeditors which have a good many links from a variety of websites.

SEO is simple and complex....so be careful what you read, this articles right on about good links giving you high rankings. And dead wrong about saying bad links kill rankings. A link is a link, however linking to a bad spam website or linkfarm will hurt you or at least could.

Cheers to all!
