When did this get put into place, and is it permanent?
Is it actually a good idea? I noticed it because I saw a comment where someone put in a sort of "signature" with a link to his site.
Seems to me that comment links is actually what nofollow is for, as opposed to paid links that Google would now like them to be for!

I think it is a good idea but I guess there will be more spam now.
Good development. Better ways to fight spam must be used.I have always argued than nofollow is not a good way of fighting spam.
Nofollow was never meant to fight spam. Do you mean to tell me that the brilliant minds that invented things like Google couldn't have found a less Fascist way to combat SPAM than to slap juice dams on everyone's blogs without their permission? lol, seriously...
I'm actually ok with the Patriot Act but those who aren't don't see it as for fighting terrorism just like I don't see NoFollow was ever for fighting SPAM but for CONTROL... for making their algorithms more stable and search results more accurate and predictable.
Noble cause but by slapping tags on everyone's blogs without even asking?
Well, they're back to being nofollowed tonight...so not sure what that was all about...
Sam... I think what they meant was it would be more likely to be Spammed ... he he
Sam,
Quite the opposite though. Google stated that nofollow was created in 2005 for the sole purpose of fighting spam.
Ah but Jonathan, surely we all know by now that what Google 'state' and what Google 'actually mean/intend' are often two entirely different things ;)
(Personally I'm at the point I'd like to give making a completely open (and open source) search engine a go. But maybe that's not something I should say in public. :) )
Debate aside, we iindeed put nofollow on to help fight spam, and it is supposed to be showing. I see it come and go, myself, Jill. I'll get someone to check on it.
