David brings insight and knowledge way beyond anyone I've read especially those talking about secret cookies.... learn how the internet works peeps... no such thing as secret cookie a domain must be included unless it is done on the host server through the header which would actually not be a cookie perse!

Agreed, WebmasterT -- this is really good stuff and worth the time to read in great detail. Well done, David.

I've published this to the home page as an "Editor's Choice" prior to it reaching the magic number.

As much as I love Googles innovation, im just not sure where exactly they intend to take this one. Personalized search is really something that has not yet lifted off as much as im sure Google would have liked.

@ Terry - thanks on that brother... and yea, I did kind of give a head shake to the 'secret cookie' bit...lol.

@ Matt, as always we need to try and get our heads around the IR side of the game IMO. The post has a TON of resources for those that really want to get a better handle on how behvioural and implicit/explicit user feedback works. Oh, and some testing never hurts... we're going to do another round, but I really don't expect to see anything new. This is a change in presentation not processing - so we're looking at much the same as in the past, just a wider adoption

@ Ken... thanks man. I was stewing on Saturday just thinking about the posts that would come this week after this happened and simply HAD to write something to counter act the FUD.... hopefully it helps us keep out heads on straight.

@GSEO one of the reasons that it really hasn't achieved it's goals (IMHO) was the lack of processing power to handle the various behavioural signals... Can U say Caffiene? Now it's a matter of establishing relevance because many of them can be noisy (such as bounce rates). We shall see where it leads...

Once again, thanks for the luv and (hopefully) getting the word out before SEOs lose their collective minds!

lol... thanks Tad... always appreciated! For me getting into Psearch (implicit / explicit signals) was something I started getting into in 06/07 really. Then late last year and early 09 we decided to do some testing on SERP flux and people were talking about 'different SERPs for all' which we found was true, just not as drastic as many peeps were saying...

I am going to put the white paper (from the research) up on my blog today at some point... And we're going to rally the troops at the SEO Dojo and do some new testing - but my thinking is that not a lot has changed in the processing, just the presentation (ie; for all, not just logged in).

No probs Miguel, and thank YOU for the kind words. I wanted to try and keep some perspective on it all. We should have some more info in the next few weeks.

I laughed and cried when I read your post, as now I'm going to have to read an encyclopedia of link knowledge you left.  Just write a book, called the Complete Guide to SEO Personalized Search. Steps 1 to 437.  Because I need another me just to absorb all this new information.

Problem with being in the loop, is the loop sometimes looks like a hangman's noose upclose.

lol... I was having the same convo with Dave Davies via Twitter last night in that he's now knee deep in patents. Of cuorse, being the nice guy that I am, sent him another dozen or so papers/patents on implicit/explicit user feedback - whooops.

Anyway, given how Google (and others) have been pimpin' Psearch over the last handful of years, it seemed an area worth studying (from the IR perspective). As for the book, at the rate they're going things would have changed (again) by the time I was done...soooo... prolly stick to blog posts lol

Stay tuned for more testing though... I am VERY curious as to how it's performing now.
