PropertyGuru, if you read the article, you'd see the author was speaking about writing content, not spamming other posts with off-topic links. Other valuable posts on the web have additional tips, such as becoming part of the community and not making your first and only contribution a badly-written link drop comment.
I have found that her l;ast advice about giving your readers and idea about what they should say is very useful. DOn't just end a post with "please let me know your thoughts", instead ask a question, that they can answer in the comment. That seems to drive comments.
