However, according to a 2009 global study sponsored by technology giant Cisco, few businesses have formal processes and policies in place to govern social media use, and this lack could lead to improper disclosure and misrepresentation.

With realtime search coming into play, companies also must consider the impact their employees can have on brand image when posting to personal social accounts outside of work hours. If employee satisfaction is low, word will likely get out, and it may not be entirely factual. This online clutter, for lack of a better term, can distract from even the best-executed (inside the company) social media marketing strategy.
