Admit to work in SEO. That's enough on many. Also do really care. If you care too much you get angry when people call you out or do things wrong and you reply. I've got banned temporarily on Mixx for calling a racist a racist and trying to inform staff about that. They were OK with the racism (free speech after all) but they hated my calling out.
Step outside the status quo. I dared to criticize banks on YCombinator Hacker News, a place where venture capitalists rule. Capitalism is holy there. So at first I got flamed for being "idiotic" and then I got banned. The "idiotic" comment is still online. Now my submissions got hidden. Nobody will see them. New comments are invisible as well.
StumbleUpon has crippled my account. All my submissions got one view no matter what topic or time I've submitted them. I was open about working in SEO and thus many people flagged me as SEO. Also I wrote bad reviews for content theft and other crap. Those people flagged me as well probably.
You have to play safe, cry with the wolves and never admit a connection to SEO. Only the perfect opportunist doesn't risk getting banned on so called social media. People who submit TechCrunch, Mashable and NYT all the time are the most popular users.
I don't use Mixx, Hacker News and StumbleUpon anymore. I won't waste my time on hostile platforms. Twitter is much better to get the word out anyways.
100% right about admitting to being an SEO... It's funny (or sad) I still see people trying to push SEO articles (that is: articles about SEO) on Digg! They'll learn the hard way.
And you're right about the comments too... Sometimes all it takes is to make a comment from an uncommon point of view and you'll be reported (for what? i don't know).
One thing i've learned to do is to mix in my link-bait/viral-bait submissions with more subs from popular sites like techcrunch, etc. That way you'll mask (at least a bit) the fact that you're in it for the marketing.
Yes, talking about SEO will get you banned faster than our prez at a KKK rally. SEO is now like the used car salesman of the 50's, but without the loud tie. :)
;) being SEO is taking soo much crap from others risking your precious time promoting sites, its like selling pancakes on the ROAD. but hey i like it.
Ya i agreed with all your suggesions. I'll take care about these suggesions for my all social profiles..
