I am trimming down my list, but one must be careful about simply following people on the basis of recent or frequent interaction.  I can think of several people I would not want to drop, even those "real life" has kept them mostly off Twitter for a few months.  There are also dozens of accounts I follow because they are great sources of information I rely on - not daily, but frequently enough - even though I have no plans ever to interact with them.

I've got no one following me on Twitter :P At least no one of interest. Guess I need to find a guide "how to build a good twitter account.

For some reasons you are right but by following bulk people your article will have chance to get so many rtweets from other people so what is wrong in this. One more thing i would like to say is i have created a list for people with whome i really intract more & i take care about they are saying on twitter. Please suggest if i am wrong...

mrdigydigy Just because you are following the people doesn't mean they are following you back and are reading your tweets or retweeting. If you follow a more select group of people, you can interact with them more and then it's more likely they will retweet. Lists are helpful to keep an eye on certain users (I create an RSS feed for my lists cos I think it's easier for me to read when I have the time), but don't overlook the rest of your followers.

I started unfollowing many twitter account which are not in my niche. Their messages at random time distracted me. So i'm sticking with twitter people in my niche.

@ryuken I have heard of more and more people going this route! I don't really think there is much point in following people who don't contribute to you or provide you with something you are looking for (a funny break from the same old stuff, etc.).

It's hard and obviously I don't advise unfollowing a friend or personal contact, but sometimes following too many can definitely be a distraction!

Ended this addiction with the one step program, deleted the Twitter account and started over. I have 9 followers and follow 6, after five months, couldn't be happier, I get no less than 12 referrals to my blog everyday!

I am starting to unfollow a lot people as well. I made the mistake and used the same twitter account for several different sites. So now I am cutting those that I followe of the other niches or those that just take up space on the twitter stream. Eventuallly I will create accounts, for each site I own.
