However, what happens when you receive a bad blog comment? Wayne has some suggestions.

Not bad, but I would add to it. Have you heard the expression, make gold out of coal? Well I like to say, make shit turn to gold!A negative comment or a flame war is not bad, and actually positive, if you can turn it around and make it work for you. People will notice you and will respect you. May take time, but there is no overnight success, only in movies and romance novels. The worst thing to do is to ban a user, delete their comments, or to ignore him or her. That makes enemies, and you never know how far a desgrunted commentator will go to get his or her revenge...
"A negative comment or a flame war is not bad, and actually positive,..." there was a flame war, but I really didnt like the look of it, so I pruned the comments a shut the article down.To be honest, I didnt make a great account of myself, and the guy who was venting was getting personal, none of which served any real purpose. They did post other seemingly sensible comments on other articles. But I checked back through the statistics for the article and someone had followed each & every link.I then checked with a colleague (a scientist) and we both agreed that the comments looked suspiciously like a cribbing of copy from the reference linked articles. So banning the user, deleting their comments and ignoring them was all that was left for me.That is an extreme example, but thats what happens when towering egos eat themselves inside out because someone else had the temerity to have an original idea of their own...
I hear you, I have been in similar situations on both sides of the aisle and I empathize with you.It is very courages of you to make an origanal statement, but to have to deal with remefications of useless goading and bashing, is almost impossible, but it is a desired strategy to keep the field of discussion under control even in the face of an attack and insulance.Yes, only as a last result you pull the triger, which I admit I have done as well, but regreting it from time to time, because I have had it done to me.Well, its best to get other it, and keep going forward, publicizing the attacker names, and fixating on them, may not be what you want to do.Googluck,Igor
Your point about shot-to-gold is sound, and its something Ive done before, often more to defuse a situation with some good-spirited humour.Maybe theres an article in there somewhere? I can see the title now: "Web alchemy: turn crap comments into trust and traffic gold!"A little long, I know, but its a start!
Has anyone addressed the issue of when comments contain racist or hate speech? Ive seen it over the years and it gets deleted. I cant imagine anything good could come from it.
Heres the same title shorter... Web Alchemy: Turn Crap Comments into Gold
I dont really care about bad blog comments. As Kumiko of CashQuests says: "If youre receiving negative comments then its an indication of your blogs growth." I never flame back and if its genuine criticism then I take it in a contructive manner...
From the article:Yes, this is censorship, but it is also my right to remove what I feel are disruptive people from the conversation. Here, here! I never understand why people are so afraid to delete comments and other posts that are disruptive. Its NOT censorship. Censorship doesnt apply to private people or companies, only the government. In order to keep any online community clean and safe and interesting for the true community, the trolls must be immediately banned and their posts removed. Period.
Sounds like Firewall, rel="nofollow", end so on!planetc1, you brought up a very interesting matter, "racist or hate!"It is interesting but at the same time very sensetive, and can start wars between countries, communities, and people if not handled approprietly.Lets take hate first because it is a bit easier, but the hate evolves from race, gender, and cast! How can you deal constructevly with a person, who just hates your gots, for what ever reason it may be?Do you Nuke him or her, or do you ingage the hate mongral?
I would say, if a hate blogger is anonymous, just nuke the comments not to start a wasteful flame war, but if the user is not anonymous, if the user is well known in your community, if the user has special connections. What do you do then?
@igorthetroll - If he or she uses racist or hateful language with the sole intention of stirring up trouble, then whoever they are, I say ban them. The same goes for anybody using racist language at all. It doesnt matter who they are or who theyre connected to. Once they travel down that road, in my opinion, they lose all credibility and become nothing more than a nasty racist, whose opinions no longer warrant the oxygen of publicity. Doesnt matter who they are, the majority will see through their vile invective.
