When looking at your competitors backlinks you will see what types of content people are linking to. You need to create a similar type of content if you don’t have it already. You can send a personal email if you find a site that links to content you already have.

I have actually used this technique in the past and it has worked out great. Sometimes you can find a great community driven website you never heard about that is really interested in doing a story on that particualr business generating a really nice link. Sometime you just have to search for a competitors name in the search engine and see what is clearly visible that you might be missing.

I found the comparison reports to be the most useful. Makes it easy to see where you are at compared to competitors sites.

I have done this many times in the past as well. I typically use the Google link back tool and tend to find nice directories, articles, and forums which I can increase my online presence through.
