It seems it is rather cool to proclaim the death of keyword rankings and position reporting of late. Barry Adams looks at changes in search, including universal and personalised search and why, although position may not be as absolute as it once was - ranking still matters.

While I like the differing opinion, I am still standing by the "don't live by your ranking results" rule. As an SEO you need to be pulling them, but not stressing over a small dip. I think personalization is affecting the SERPs, and we have to take every "rank" with a grain of salt. But it is the first line of defense when things start to go south. Just don't overreact.
