Good lord, this created a debate. Caroline’s initial post about thanking Stumblers clearly raised a storm. This is an interesting discussion about psychology and the varying opinions of human beings. Worth a read as a reminder to us all that we are all different.

Not exactly about psychology but I understand why it seems that way.  It’s about someone discovering that not all people want to be thanked and that not all "thank-yous" were created equal. Some people are irritated by a mechanical thank-you for something they don’t even know they did.  When they attribute it to the "thanker" being insincere and looking for more attention or traffic, it’s perfectly understandable.  Even if they’re wrong about a given individual, they’re going to be right most of the time. After all, which politeness conditioned robot would argue with the fact that "thanking people" for something that benefited him or her is a polite thing to do?   Would you thank someone because his building a house next to yours caused your property value to go up?No, you wouldn’t.  If you wanted to express sincere gratitude, you’d do something irresistably nice like buy him a bottle of wine but any schmoe can give a cheap thanks and when they do, they get whatever they get.
