Does everyone agree then?
I agree up to a point - you'd expect a searcher to express specific intent in long tail search, and arrive at a deep page. Whereas generic search terms are likely to arrive at the home page, which makes sense if they have a much more general interest. So these pages exist for rather different purposes, and SEO means that they'll likely rank highest for different types of searches.
