A interesting post from Altogether Digital how they managed to get their blog mentioned on Sky News the UK’s equivalent to CNN

On the business of name checks, many media types apparently do not like to give free advertising for products, services or organisations. It seems they are often happy to use the information you provide, but at the same time are usually quite unwilling to quote the source.

That’s what we figured it was, but then isn’t a newspaper a product, business or service?;)

I think the "what the papers say" slot has become a bit of a tradition at the end of the news.I don’t see many other times when the source is acknowledged.

Ah, but here’s what I really want to know. What is the Sky reader doing to find the blogs to prepare for the segment? C’mon, someone reach out and discover? Google Blog Search, Technorati, what? Nail that, and you nail future mentions.

Danny, whilst I don’t have any direct evidence, I’m guessing the fact that we made the home page of Google News UK that day (in the Sci/Tech section) may well have had something to do with it (think I mentioned this in the post). We also ranked highly on Technorati that day on the tag Bebo that day.

did you see a discernable increase in direct traffic ciaran? I spose it’s very difficult to attribute it to additional coverage

We had a very small spike in traffic on the Thursday, but really no more than we would based on the fact that the story was high in Google News etc... Like I said, it’s actually pretty hard to tell which site the post is from (the guy who spotted it must be super eagle-eyed!)
