Thanks Andy, but why add "Services" in the title? Isnt it redundant now?
The original title just didnt flow right for me.Despite a grammar school education and a father as a proof reader I am terrible at grammatical explanations, and often get things wrong, especially being an expat. Some things can be correct in a grammatical sense and still seem a little clumsy or there is a complex rule that I cant quote for specific situations.
Ah, I guess you mean the two "as" in "mediA Are" kind of hinder the flow.
One of the tasks I used to perform when I was working with Techland in Poland was correcting English text that had been translated by professional translators from Polish. It was almost always grammatically correct.Sometimes even though I wasnt very good at Polish, I would translate things directly from the Polish, because I couldnt understand what the grammatically correct English text was saying.I know that seems weird...I could rarely give specific reasons why I made changes. We had a similar situation on the Collective Thoughts blog a couple of days ago, someone claiming to be a professor in English & marketing trying to correct me on my English. Without Googling for an answer I couldnt have stated why I used a particular spelling for a word.
Are you a Polish native speaker or an expat?
"Most of the social media users are the plain slaves working at the plantation while the power users are house niggers who have some personal gain out of the being a slave."Interesting choice of words, a grammatical error to boot ("out of the being a slave."). I guess the N-word doesnt carry a negative connotation over in Europe, though publishing an article like that in the US would likely force a writer into Alcoholics Anonymous.
Ive read the post and Sphunn it, but I dont entirely agree with it. I dont see it as black and white as the author, mainly because despite the lack of pay in some outlets, the creator has to consciously accept that compromise to start playing. Im sure better systems could be used, but I think that everyone knows (or should know) the rules up front before signing up.
Halfdeck I agree it is a risky term, but the first reference was stating it was a term used by Malcolm X with the second use shortly after it, in context.Tad I am an expat - I have been living in Poland the last 14 years - I have never been much of a linguist so dont expect me to start blogging in Polish any time.
Andy, Halfdeck chooses to nag without reading posts. Its not the first time. Its time for an ignore feature on Sphinn.
"but the first reference was stating it was a term used by Malcolm X"Again, European sensibilities may be different, but over here in the US, the N-word is often not used at all because it is hurtful, with or without context.
I am aware of that, though I am not sure if you are quoting someone you should change what they said... well maybe Dave Naylor ;)p.s. this is a great article on the N-word that one of my readers wrote the other day. She was a little worried about promoting it, and had been told that it wouldnt do well in social media.I encouraged her to promote it as someone had already submitted it to Digghttp://digg.com/videos/comedy/My_Reaction_to_the_N_Word
"I am not sure if you are quoting someone you should change what they said"True, though I also have a choice of not quoting something that contains the N-word. Its not hard to find a work-around. Onreact also didnt quote a paragraph that contains the N-word; instead he used a term coined (I assume) by Malcom X. How hard is it to work around two words (house N****)?"p.s. this is a great article on the N-word that one of my readers wrote"Nice article. I only had time to skim it, but it seems to capture the complexities involved.
So you really think that an article about slavery must contain Orwellian newsspeak to mask the truth about it? Give me a break. Here in Europe we speak about history to learn from the past. At university I did American Studies btw. and my best friend is black. So stop nagging. Last but not least: Obama for President! :-)I think your problem is rather being confronted with the dark past of American history.
Its a real shame when posts that can otherwise be SEO educational is perpetrated by things that are irrelevant to article debate. I am here for knowledge about SEO and to maybe make a couple friends along the way. I have my own opinions about controversial issues, but am beginning to see where those discussions can only distract me from what Im really here for.Andy: I took time out to view that link. I imagine it has really made people think. And, the CR vid was hilarious! I love her take on it. Dont let todays perpetrator get ya riled, afterall, hes only dealing with a halfdeck. *>)
"Its a real shame when posts that can otherwise be SEO educational is perpetrated by things that are irrelevant to article debate."Pay attention. This thread started off with a conversation about a grammatical error in the post Title. "So you really think that an article about slavery must contain Orwellian newsspeak to mask the truth about it?"Choosing not to use the N-word is Orwellian newsspeak? LMAO. Like I said, Europeans must have different sensibilities. I didnt tell you what not to write btw, my previous comment: "interesting choice of words." So stop putting words in my mouth."Last but not least: Obama for President! :-)"Obama has no chance of winning. Look forward to another 4 years of republican reign and a war in Iran.
uh, er, ahem...HALFDECK....lol
"uh, er, ahem...HALFDECK....lol"Heh, if you came here to babytalk people into a flame war, youre gonna be dissappointed.
Wow, chill out. I came here to learn, and experiment with what works and doesnt work for me. Simple as that. Babytalk....gosh, golly gee.
"gosh, golly gee."Lol, there you go again, babe.Have a fun stay at Sphinn.
So far so good. I even like YOU. *>)
