... It seems to me that here in the UK there resides an unhealthy apathy towards SEO in general.

Every man and his dog now has a website, the rule of thumb seeming to be that you must have one if you want to be a success in the hi-tech age we now inhabit...

There are very many UK businesses still without a website, and for the majority that do have one, most have less than effective SEO.B.T.W. I don’t see SMO as being a part of SEO.  Both are a separate part of marketing and promotion.

@g1smd: Agreed. I meant to say that SMO was now a viable part of internet marketing in conjunction with standard SEO. I tend to still use SEO as an umbrella term for internet promotion. *slapped wrists*

I’m generally a picky sod for using the exact words to describe stuff.  :-)

I’ve always wondered if SMO would come under SEM? Danny’s term was meant to be all inclusive for online marketing activity. Only problem I see is that many of these platforms generate traffic in their own right, outside of the channels of the SE’s.

I call SMO a "kissing cousin" of SEO. They’re closely related, and I think they should be done together, but I wouldn’t put them under one or the other.

In general we may be behind the US, but we do have the best grey hats in the world.

It’s because Google is based in the U.S. and people who know very little about SEO mainly equate the two.
