Facebook and Google have been competing with each over more than just social networking. Facebook is growing from 300ish employees today to 700 next year. And the best place to get good engineers and others is Google, where many have already vested on their stock options and are looking for the next big hit.

I don't know about this.  I don't work at either google or facebook but would assume that google has more longevity than facebook. If I had the choice between google and facebook, it would be google in a minute. All it takes is someone to launch the next hot SN site to cause facebook to lose 'market share.' I can see this happenin long before a new google type search engine hits the 'net (and is as big as google).

In other words - I see facebook as being a trend.  I don't see this with google.
