Your blogging style is up to you. I for one usually shy away from newly hot and trending topics for various reasons: firstly, I am not based in the USA and thus I am slow in learning what everyone says, secondly, seeing great coverage, I usually have hard time finding what to add.

The admin here (Danny Sullivan) has a sphunn article that he wrote on this same topic where he did a case study on the keyword 'chocomize'.... interestingly enough, after writing the article his content was scraped and syindicated on a Google News site. Check it out: http://sphinn.com/story/155448

Pretty funny way to drive a point home.

I would bet these sphinns actually increase trending topic blogging

I believe this is what super blogger Perez Hilton does to get his traffic to grow. Posting Mel Gibson rants is a good way. Problem is how do you monetize the traffic - maybe selling movies?

I saw one the other day that was a long detaied list of how expensive Chelsea Clinton's wedding was... then at the bottom there was a CPA for some kind of biz opp with something that said 'Want to be that rich?' Sounds like a huge headache to me... finding the trend (which most of them you wouldn't even care about) then blogging about it, then matching a CPA.... not fun.
