I’m wondering if its best to comment here or on the original post to get a response from Jim.My question being is it best to have a buffer word in the anchor text when setting up a back link?E.g. Which would be better: "seo company" or "organic seo company"?

Well it’s not a good idea to have the same phrase in all your inbound links. The main reason, this looks over-seo’ed and there is a filter to catch this in Google. It doesn’t look natural. If you were building links from users they would be unlikely to all choose the same phrase, so neither should you. So "seo company" and "organic seo company" are both fine IMO, use a variety of long-tail phrases as well as the key ones you are targeting. I even throw in a "click here" or two for good measure ;)/I hope Jim would agree with me, his posts are required reading in my office!

I would agree with Nick totally ;) - use a variety of link text, but focus on what you’re targeting.

ahhh Jim - sometimes you seem like the only sane man left in SEO. i exclude myself by default from all sanity contests for obvious reasons... they’d drive me crazy.
