Amazon’s Alexa traffic reporting service has little credibility left among people who follow traffic trends.

No matter how many times its said out-loud, that Alexa is useless, people stilll seem to care about their ranking there (and comparisons to competitors there) etc...Maybe if we all blogged about "Alexa is useless" rather than continue to quote rankings it’d help.

I thought we all realised sometime last century that it has no basis with reality.

WE did, but no one else, unfortunately.

Thank heavens for some anti-Alexa posts. I was beginning to think everyone was drinking their green coolaid.

Kool-Aid it certainly is, but lots of big company CEOs and their agencies are relying on it massively to assign their advertising budgets, so high Alexa rankings can translate into some pretty serious money. But then, so does Kool-Aid itself. :)

Read the comments though, especially by Duncan Riley about Comcast, and how I compare with Techcrunch on Compete... I should be selling advertising for their June rate, which I am sure was still around $10000When Techcrunch talk about their page views, I sometimes wonder if that is AWstats ;)

Who the **** is advising these big company CEOs to invest ad budgets based on Alexa rankings? Are they really that inept? OK - yes - I know they are... but why haven’t they found a decent SEO or Analytics pro or even a Sphinner to advise them yet? I guess we just need to keep down-playing Alexa stats since they aren’t fixing (or even acknowledging) the problem themselves.

What do you use instead?

@thinkingsource - Both http://www.compete.com and http://www.quantcast.com - two very reliable sources. Other sources include HitWise and Comscore, but their data is extrememly costly to obtain and not all that much better, if at all, than the two above.  Data is only available by subscription from these two.Compete and Quantcast are excellent.  Read their sources, and compare to your own stats, to determine which you trust more.Ultimately, I’m sure either is better than Alexa as that source is still reliant solely, to my knowledge, on toobar usage and Alexa toolbar usage is scewed by too many SEO types using the toolbar as well as a big increase in Asian toolbar usage recently.  (It’s too easy to "game" Alexa as a result.)

Frankly I’m disgusted by this and will post a more in-depth comment later  ;)

Tim just have a look at Compete comparing my site with Techcrunch - do I really have 1/3 or Techcrunch’s reach and the same reach as Techcrunch had in June?My Compete score is actually better than Alexa and on compete you will be glad to know that Techcrunch has finally caught up with SearchEngineLand, though it is fairly close.http://siteanalytics.compete.com/andybeard.eu+searchengineland.com+techcrunch.com/?metric=uvQuantcast is nice, but isn’t viable comparing a site that is Quantified with one that isn’t unless they take a special interest in your site to give better results with some kind of extrapolation from other sources.

@baiduyou Hahaha. :) Alexa sucks but fantomaster is right... Advertisers do buy ads roughly based on the Alexa Rank, which they think to be accurate, even though almost everyone has written about how it isn’t. It’s a lousy tool but it makes me and other small-time webmasters/businesses a lotta money so I ain’t complaining about that part.

What’s funny is that a Google AdSense rep called the other day citing how impressive our Alexa traffic ranking was. (it’s not) Sales people, even at Google, apparently will say the most interesting things to get the job done.

As one of the advertisers that many of you are speaking of for various businesses, it is in fact YOU people, the Sphinn members, the bloggers that sell advertising and the webmasters that promote it. It is you who talk of Alexa rank by bragging to other webmasters how great your rank is. It is the same with pagerank. Don’t you people understand? Me, as an advertiser, I didn’t even know this crap until ALL OF YOU keep pointing it out to me how great your PR8 blog is ( then cry when it is now a PR4), or from PR6 to PR0.  You know, for all of my businesses I advertise for TRAFFIC, eyeballs for whatever services my company gets.  It is YOU my friends that perpetuate ALexa and Pagerank.  Have you all not noticed the same articles from various SEO and now social media people.  Here is how it goes. In the beginning, "Oh I love pagerank, Google has my site at PR (whatever)  Then an update comes.  You then complain that how dare they drop you for this and that.  ( It is their right to do so since YOU keep playing their game and they do own pagerank). Then you see the kiss asses who weren’t dropped yet go " See, if your blog was of better quality, then next update ZAP - " Oh my god, how could Google do this? ( As if you are some loyal googler that they care about! and someone put your site aside to NOT drop because Matt Cutts loves you). Please people wake up and smell the coffee. If Pay PerPost didn’t rank Blogs payment by pagerank, and if you guys who sell advertising didn’t rely on a system that can penalize you at a company’s whim, then this little dilemma wouldn’t exist. For those of you with great pagerank now who still go around with the bull " Well this or that, my site is tops - let’s see your big mouth in 3 or 6 months.  Then WAAAAAAAAAH   they dropped me.  Google is evil.  Hey, as a business owner Google can do as it pleases. They own it all. As a webmaster or SEO or Socila media person, well then maybe you should stop praising ( about 25% of you still are and miraculously - wow - your pr didn’t change yet to your detriment. Or as one of you fellows exclaimed I only lost one point!).I told a number of you that praising them or any company like this knowing that the hammer can come anytime is appeasing, plain and simple. Like what Winston Churchill said. An Appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.
