Kelvin Newman writes on Econsultancy that that the public relations firms could have done more to get into search engine optimisation but he continues by saying that despite this reticence to get going he thinks there’s a scary truth that the search firms need to wake up to: if and when the PR industry gets its act together a lot of the link development tactics search companies are delivering could be delivered by someone with a public relations background.

Going to start trying out our new model by putting the stories I like right to the home page this weekend.

This one is right on target, imo. I believe PR firms (good ones that also understand social media) are the way to go for the future of link building.

I think everything should be connected in a holistic way, also for link building: SEO, social media, bookmarking, article marketing (with RELEVANT content) etc. and certainly PR! So many PR agencies & businesses not even adding links in their press releases, both on their sites and on PR sites. And so many businesses not adding social sharing buttons to their press releases while it's easy to do. If press releases contain relevant content and are written well (keeping in mind the target group and adding value), they get retweeted. Doing it all the time for my customers! But most PR agencies don't get it. More business for me I guess ;)
