Does anyone know the # of sphinns required to go from new to hot?
Hello ,
I'm working on a study and I'm trying to find out what the exact # of sphinns required is to go from new to hot, and in what time frame?
Thank you for your help in advance!
I tried searching around the site, but found nothing!

Hi Steaprok. 21 sphinns will put you on the front page. As for time frame, I'm not sure of any strict rule, but it generally seems fair to say that once you've fallen deep into the 'what's new' pages, you're not going to get any more votes.
EDIT: The 'What's New' pages go up to eleven, then oblivion. But it's reasonable to say that a posts lifespan hits critical around the page six or seven mark - even though I think I have had a submission go hot that had reached page six, though I think it was already on the twenty mark. A good rule of thumb is the more sphinns a submission gets in the first three pages (14 - 16?), the more chance it will have of eventually going hot.
That's how I see it anyway. Anybody think differently? Am I talking complete nonsense?
I wonder if there are different amount of sphinns required for different users? Seems like that!
The cut off is just over two days, but also depends on the number of comments and some other factors.
There have been several prior discussions on this topic.
Actually the cutoff is around 3 days.
Your primary objective in the first day is to get on the http://sphinn.com/upcoming/mostpopular/ page, which enough users look at occasionally to get you the rest of the way.
It would be great if all users visited it more often, as it is a shame for a story to get to 15+ votes in the first 12 hours and then not make it to the front page in 3 days.
Danny has explained in the past that comments are part of it too, thus in theory if a post has enough comments it can make it to the front page regardless of how many Sphinns.
The number of vites needed to go hot change frequently as they tweak things.
@ Andy Thanks for your answer.
PS: it is definately not always 21 sphinns. My post yesterday required 22 sphinns despite a good number of comments. Maybe its some credibility factor related to the sphinner? I did notice that just a few minutes earlier than mine a post by someone else required only 21... hey wait, now I'm starting to take this personally. I guess my reputation isn't so hot :)
yes, I have encountered the same problem where my posts require 24 sphinns. Whats up with that?
