Tamar- strong article with a lot of specifics. I will definitely be heading over to Mixx (have meant to do so for a few weeks, but have been covered up with my current SM footprint and client work). I would ask, generally speaking, what is the topical landscape at Mixx? Is it still tech and humor heavy, like digg, or has it started to develop its own "personality" yet?
Hey katfrench: I havent seen a real strong topical landscape yet (which makes it all the more alluring to new users). Theres a mix of stories in *all* areas. There even is an SEO "private group" (though I havent seen SEO stories be submitted yet). I think that at this point, it really is one of those sites where you can still play a role in determining what will be the topical landscape in months to come, so by all means, go for it :)
Thanks for sharing. Had signed up last month but needed that virtual kick in the butt to get active.
Thanks...thats actually the answer I was hoping for. In poking around a bit, I see that even the high-level categories and topics are a pretty broad spectrum. Ive been looking for a way around Digg. Its just so volatile (I work mostly with fairly conservative companies who are a bit iffy on SM in general), and all the high ground has already been claimed there.
Digg in general is pushing away "marketing strategies" even if theyre viral and they work. Ive already pointed fingers at them for "autoburying" domains and that might be the reason. Im sure they know that their site is bringing lots of traffic to other sites (for content voted upon by people who agree with the submission!) but the service doesnt seem to be as autonomous as some folks believe. By all means, if youve spent forever working on an awesome viral marketing piece, submit it wherever and let it get the attention it deserves. It wont work on Digg for the aforementioned reasons, but it will work elsewhere.
I cant see all of the hype for a site that has less features than my own site earthfrisk.comIt just doesnt make sense at all. Mixx in fact is almost an exact clone to pligg, the open source software that I based my own site Earthfrisk on originally, before I added social networking, social media, groups and a lot more. I still love Digg as the Daddy and alos Stumbleupon and do not see any mass exodus to Mixx. If I did, maybe I should advertise my own Earthfrisk more or if anyone reading this wants to start their own site check out Pligg.com. It is pretty easy to do and overnight you can match the features of this hyped Mixx site.
