"you can't ever stop"
That's the best advice on the page. I think that's the thing a lot of people forget about when doing their online marketing. They think you can get to that coveted #1 position one time and just stop and it will stay that way. If you're in business, marketing is like eating- you can stop... for a little while, but eventually you're going to die
Nice to see a different perspective. A couple of nuggets in there.
Couple of misconceptions under "2. text is king" in that "Absolutely forget that flash site you like. And while you’re at it, unless it is absolutely necessary - scrap any and all .pdf files everywhere. Search engines can’t read the first one at all and even if they can read the second one, nobody likes to click on them."
Search engines have been reading FLASH files for years now just fine.
Heck, haven't you noticed that Google even offers the PDF files translated to HTML in many cases?
The problem is the FLASH doesn't have any structure that tends to indicate subject relevance so the text is just a hodge podge of words in no particular order. The obvious solution is to not abandon FLASH but give the search engines, or anyone else that can't read the FLASH and alternative in HTML similar to the use of SCRIPT and NOSCRIPT for those with javascript disabled.
Gee, who knew I'd take issue with "5:... be patient" and quoting times in weeks and months to rank?
That used to be true but I test Google and Yahoo all the time and they are FAST these days with Live coming in a close 3rd and ASK, well, it does what it does, not hold your breath.
I've launched new sites that show in as little as a week, a brand new Blogspot blog for a friends product was indexed and ranking in less than 2 hours, second test showed up same day but a bit longer, my blog posts have shown up in the main index in as little as 30 minutes multiple times.
My main website gets indexed non-stop and the pages with high turnover rate get re-indexed same day or show up next day worse case meaning I can adjust some keywords and see SERP changes in as little as 2 days.
The problem with sites that take weeks or months may be that they're more static which don't require getting crawled as often so making a site less static would probably solve that issue and give more flexibility in the future.
Sometimes we still have to look at the forest instead of the trees. Great reminder.
Good article except his market share numbers are off by 20% or more
This is a good article but I felt the need to argue every single one of the points. You can read my follow up post here: http://sphinn.com/story/16509
