This is a good post. There have been a lot of changes to google lately and they have impacted on rankings. I do think meta tags are still important and best practice to have.
Carly thank you for the compliment, I completely agree with you that meta data is relevant. My comment was directed as purely hypothetical in the sense that if Google chooses to bypass this information, that the ground work could already be in place to do so at some point. As for now we are not suggesting to alter traditional SEO best practices for meta information in any way.
