Want your voices heard on the paid links debate? Post in this thread. Currently, Maile Ohye and Matt Cutts, I assume, are keeping their eyes on it.

It is nice to see them offering more public feedback and questions.  Great find as usual.

Since I am never able to comment on those groups threads due to who knows what error...here's my comment...

For every example of a bad paid post such as the example Matt gave, I bet one of us could come up with an example of a good paid post that gives a serious review of some product or service and that is objective, informative, and relevant.  Are there bad paid posts?  Sure.  Are there bad posts period, paid or otherwise?  Sure.  Are there good paid posts?  Sure.  Are there good posts period, paid or otherwise?  Sure.

If Google wants to mess with paid posts, fine, but please - don't insult our intelligence.  There are examples of bad content all over the internet - paid and unpaid.  One thing does not lead to another.

I thought Phil Payne's post was thought-provoking. He put my thoughts into words better than I did. Never thought about the possibility that GG may have gotten some legal threats about the paid links stance.

Google is potentially in legal trouble regarding these paid links and reducing some peoples page rank and not others who are selling links. Google are already being sued by the ACCC regarding the sponsored links that appear at the top of their search. The ACCC is also investigating this situation and they have spoken to a number of bloggers about it. If you are in Australia and you have been affected it is worth giving the ACCC a call.

@ Snoskred - Sorry, but I'm familiar with the ACCC case and it's based on complete ignorance about how AdWords works. In a nutshell, they don't understand that advertisers using Broad Match will have their ads shown for all types of irrelevant matches. For example, if an advertiser is targeting the search phrase "used cars", their ad will show up for searches such as "Brand X used cars" or "buy used cars from Brand X". The people lodging this suit have misinterpreted this and assume that the advertiser is deliberately targeting Brand X as a search phrase. Ridiculous that the suit has gone this far. They'll be laughed out of court.

@ Harith - yes there have been several posts linking to that page in the past 48 hours.
