Anil Dash points to three separate articles bemoaning the perceived decline in Google's search results. But not all of the early commenters there agree. Do you?

Matt Cutts should be highly embarrassed. Or is he no longer the head of Google's web spam team? Perhaps this month's 30 day challenge for Matt should be to actually get rid of web spam rather than learning some more vocabulary words.

Google really is churning out bad results. I did some searches recently for learning German. I got awful brain rot from about.com as the first result. There were no decent resoucres on learning German. The Deusche Welle interactive pages on learning German didn't show up. Their website is pretty up to date and current with SEO best practices, certainly more modern and noteworthy in contrast to about.com

I take it they're your client? (Or it's your site?)

It's clear that after all of our denying it for years that SEO really does equal spam today. :(

Jill I have to agree with you.  I absolutely love Google and Matt Cutts, but lately it seems the article and press release websites are taking over search results with content that has zero value or makes little sense. I tell SEO clients to stay clear of such practices, but when they pop up in results, it is hard to keep nagging everyone (and more importantly getting them to listen) about doing the right thing.

Jill. Deutsche Welle is neither my site nor am I affiliated with them. I just happen to read German news and follow their English service website. I agree with your position and the OP. We've become slaves to Google.

Does anybody have evidence, such as a screen capture of results from a few years ago compared to the same search today?

And BTW, it's not really 3 separate articles, since each one quotes the one before (and the first one is over a year old).

Bad practises are ruining small business SEO for some of our smaller clients or even family businesses cannot get there website to rank for a relatively low search volume keyword. Because someone has 1000s of spammy directory links.

I mentioned this here:

Also there is a TechCrunch article bemoaning the decline of Google quality:
