Its both, but I lean more towards science also.
I would say more art than science.
One of the fundamentals of Science is you have to be able to replicate it(ask the cold fusion guys). It's not that simple. Some day, make 5 sites, all on the same topic, just reworded. Submit them to the same places. Prepare to be surprised as they all rank differently.
Beyond that, replicating link bait, viral growth, sales pitches. All of these have a success rate below 10% for most. That's not Science. Now for a decent artist, 10% sounds much more reasonable as a success rate.

Really? Maybe I'm still young and idealistic, hoping and dreaming that the SE's are a magical entity with powers of deciphering quality.
@ SlightlyShadySEO
Thank you, sir. Man after my own thoughts.
@Shady I sorta agree, but science plays a role in duplicating the same methods that work. It may be art that makes them unique, but the tactics are based on science that has been duplicated and proven many times over.
Interesting that marketing grads hold a Bachelors of Science degree :)
i'm going to have to agree with the whole science side of this. using the term "art" seems a little generous when mentioning seo, i would go more with good old research and commom sense when refering to making on page adjustments
when refering to making on page adjustments
But SEO is so much more than that. :-)
My answer to the question would be: Both, and, It depends on the client.
A bit of both, and the science bit is the bit that many sites miss out on doing - to their detriment.
Art!
@handsomerob
heh. No marketing/science degree here. Unless computer science counts. And even then, I've got another 2 years or so until my undergrad is done ;-)
