In today's society where everyone expects everything for free or at least something for free, it is difficult to walk the line of wanting to help someone and keeping our expert advise to ourself. I know that both in my freelance and day-to-day job my customers are looking to me to help improve their sites. There have been many times where I haven given advise on a subject, then mention a price to take care of the task and two weeks later they have tried to implement themselves. I am just glad that this happens infrequently.
Unfortunately this is "business as usual" for a lot of companies, and has been for as long as I've been consulting.. I remember going through this in the late 80s when I thought I had a chance to work with a major company in California.. After talking with other people in the trade I discovered that this company had "interviewed" dozens of people and never hired any of them..
