I completely agree with the fact that it basically comes down to a lot of hard work. I have been on Twitter for nearly three years and have just over 20,000 followers so by those calculations I should be collecting my pension by the time the magical 50,000 is clocked!
Twitter is mostly bots so getting 50k bots to follow you is no big deal. I could have a lot more followers if I autofollowed. The only way to get 50k real followers without auto follow is to actually be famous. It is impossible to only be famous on twitter.
