I was thinking about some possible new strategies the other day to leverage Twitter to drive a lot of traffic, followers and hopefully $$ back to you. These are not tested, and if someone has tried it I would love for them to post in the comments what they did and if they saw any direct result to their bottom line.

Interesting ideas.  I have thought about using twitter to tell a bizarre story.  Give each character a different account and if it’s possible, link to the other characters accounts contextually.

This is SO easy that I’m beside myself every time I read about people wondering how to use it effectively. I already wrote articles about how to get lots of people to follow quickly. After that, you can work it in 2 ways (<a target="_blank" href="http://controversialmarketing.blogspot.com/search/label/twitter">here are my twitter articles</a>).1) you simply use the time-tested technique of a quality "headline" or intro ... not to dupe people into visiting but to properly entice them into something that will be of real interest (either to read for themselves or to, at least, as a maven, tell their friends); But here’s the rubOnce they arrive, they need to be put through an amplification process so that every action they take, they are producting 5 to ? results - (eg, refer a friend, generous affiliate program, viewing a page that produces multiple ad credits, etc)2) you CAN work the meme angle by having people want to Twitter to their friends about something that somehow refers back to you. However, if you read #1, you can have them do that anyways but for different reasons. In #1, they do it for income or fame generation. In #2, meme, they do it for corny fun such as "The Top 10 Reasons I Tweet" or something silly like that.--- But I really believe this conversation is DEAD because this is one of those topics that, were one to look closely, would reveal that it has nothing to do with MORE KNOWLEDGE and everything to do with WILL. I am not exaggerating when I say that the will to use Twitter in such ways has to come from having a bigger GOAL... not just a "more traffic" goal.If you talk about it from the "more traffic" goal then we’re just adding YET ANOTHER thing for someone to run around doing every day. Eventually, it gets to be too much and with all the nonsensical tweets, the avg person is befuddled and sees Twitter as a bunch of rambling madness.... rather than people with WANTS AND NEEDS.Sam

A local colleague at a traditional agency has used Twitter for marketing a fairly large brand, so obviously there’s merit to the approach.

Katfrench, its not clear if you’re referring to the article or my comment but I’ve obviously given credence to there being merit for it.  That doesn’t seem to ever be in question.  It’s whether or not the avg person has the use for it.The problem, if one really exists, is that a bunch of people who have NO NEED for Twitter are writing about Twitter as being useless.  It’s their piss poor, undeveloped creative functions that are to blame but, for their 2 minutes of fame, they go on and smear their ineptitude on the blogosphere.
