Ever wondered who those poor lowly creatures are who have nothing else to do but bury your submissions all the time at Digg disregarding whether they are great resources or not?
At Mixx you can watch the same people messing up the community. Here "negative votes" are displayed though.
So who are they? They do not contribute nothing of value themselves. They hate art, women and they love Bush even if he wants another lie to lead to a new war.

These are yet one of the many reasons why allowing someone to have the controlling ability over the web.  Even though the feature was intended to hide posts that were irrelevant, it was found that it could be abused for the greater good of someone else.

Iv’e seen this in action, I just hit em back 5 times harder, if someone down votes one of my submissions, then I will down vote 5 of theirs.

Well, but they do not submit in the first place! 4 out of the 5 I exposed had not a single story submitted. Some of them had more stories buried than voted for. So you can’t "bury in retaliation".

I don’t bury in retaliation because it goes against the true spirit of a social news site. We might be marketers but we are all members of the same social community, first and foremost. If the story they submitted sucks, I’ll probably do it. But I don’t see the point in lowering yourself to their standards... no need to get so personal and emotional about it. These people are everywhere. On Digg, Propeller, StumbleUpon and most other social news sites or forums. They aren’t going against the TOS because they’re just using their account features. A downvote is still a relevant vote, just in the opposite direction. But yeah, these people stink up social media. Can’t do much about them I guess.

Well, if someone would go "Google bowling" with you to lower your rankings it would be against the TOS all right so why tolerate this in social media? It’s exactly because theire submissions, if they have any, suck big time I also bury them.Evidently the commnity must do something about that as of course burying in retaliation is a childish way of dealing with it, but at least there is one at all, while at most other places you’ll get mobbed without any means of defense. It’s like with every social group, in real life also, those who destroy a group from within must be neutralized or expelled.

It’s exactly because theire submissions, if they have any, suck big time I also bury them.Google bowling and social news voting are big differences. I don’t see the parallel. In this situation, people are simply exercising their account features in a way that want to use it. There are people in Propeller who have more sinks than votes and a special bury group in SU organized to thumb down ’spam’ sites. It’s just their way of interacting in their community. Some of them are also people passionate about the community, just as you are. It’s a Nazi-ish way of purifying what they perceive to be junk and I’m not saying that they are justified, nor am I saying that you ’tolerate it.’ It’s just important to see their point of view and take it in from a bigger perspective. An eye for an eye makes everyone go blind. If you truly care about the social community, bury according to the story’s value and not the person who submitted it. You can certaintly report these users to the Mixx admin and let them decide to ’expel’ or ’neutralize’ them or not.

Tad - I have hated it in the past when they have had no submissions to vote down. Hmm that’s a good point dosh, I will try to rise above it in the future.

Oh yeah baby! Just made the Sphinn that turned this hot :)!Anyways, "So who are they? They do not contribute nothing of value themselves. They hate art, women and they love Bush even if he wants another lie to lead to a new war." Lol, you make them sound like they’re terrible, soulless people. Also, you’re implying that someone can’t be homosexual (or did you mean that they’re sexist? that’s something else entirely), dislike art, or like Bush and still be a good person. Pushing it a bit, imho.@Dosh ... Nazi-like? Strong language, no? If you were talking about censorship, it’s not like they invented it, anyways (not to defend Nazis or anything; I’m just making the point that voting something down is not quite the same as being genocidal...) That said, I agree with you about voting things up/down based upon their quality, and that it’s an inherent part of the communities that doesn’t parallel Google-bowling.

It is Nazi-like because they have taken it upon themselves to collectively purify the social website of junk and aim to keep it clean with only content they approve of. It’s only a simple comparison... no need to nit pick. :)

We might be marketers but we are all members of the same social community, first and foremost. This is a great point we are all professionals (well mostly) trying to bring to light some piece of news that may help out.  And not try and shamelessly self promote at the expense of someone else.

This does annoy me no end.  It’s just one of those things.  You can’t please everyone all the time.

I first noticed it 2 days ago on my submissions. In fact, it’s quite obvious they do not bother to read at all - the moment they see the word ’marketing’ they bury or vote it down. Wasn’t too pleased but decided not to bother for similar reasons stated by Maki. Anyway it wouldn’t be productive for me personally to go toe to toe - for every one that votes a story down, there’s just as likely another who’ll vote it up and help spread the word.
