I think they need to get the messaging system working properly. The way it is at the moment (temperamental, to say the least) renders networking through Sphinn redundant.
Agreed, I have not been able to message others for a few weeks now, continue to get "error number 1" messages.
Would be great if Sphinn had a forum non-sphinning area where we could communicate.
i think i have used the messaging system maybe once. swags i just sent you a message, how does it notify you of an incoming message?
All - we're aware of the problems with the PM system, and after we launch the upcoming spam fighting features for users & moderators, we'll be getting back to fixing this and a couple of other problems within the native pligg features (pligg is the platform Sphinn runs on). Additional networking features we want to add are on the horizon as well.
@northrock - if someone has sent you a PM - when you login to Sphinn you'll see a count up in the top light blue nav bar next to your "inbox" link - i.e. Inbox (1) would indicate you have one unread message.
it seems the sole purpose of a friend list in many cases is a competition to see how many friends you can get. being able to tag and group friends would be one way to sort them into meaningful targets of communication.
oops, i forgot all about the inbox link up there. :) thanks michelle!
Sphinn hasn't made it easy for people to communicate with one another. I know this isn't obvious to them or they would have changed it by now but to communicate with people here its like 1 by 1 by 1 and the communications interface is slow. And many times I've tried to send a friendly reply to a "thank you" and gotten error messages that did not allow me to, at least, retrieve the original text and try again. Just gone...
So who would want to even bother going into that module or realm except for a newbie who didn't know better yet? THE POINT BEING... that there are so many other sites where keeping in touch with colleagues is not only far easier but also the main point...
@northrock - Received the message, sent one back. Good discussion point.
@SamFreedom - Couldn't agree more. I often feel I'm coming across as ignorant or arrogant because the system won't allow me to message people who've added me or sphunn my stuff. I don't even bother trying anymore.
an agree and disagree button for each post would be interesting. possible examples to view, compare and discuss would be results like:
- single post, all voters - 70% agree & 30% disagree
- two voters all posts in common - dannysullivan & graywolf disagree 76% of the time
- single voter vs the rest of the community - MattCutts agrees with the rest of the sphinn community 16% of the time
something like this may lead to more chatter & fun between folks. :)So....
Right now, the friending system doesn't really do much, agreed. I've posted before that this will change -- from when we launched, we mentioned we want to have Sphinn do things such as let you see a custom feed of submissions from just those people you friend. The difficulty is that the core software that Sphinn uses, Pligg, just ain't that refined. Indeed, most of our time has been spent on improving the spam fighting tools that Pligg lacks, since that's been the chief issue we've faced so far.
The spam tools should be complete this month, then January is definitely set to upgrade the social aspects of Sphinn, including fixing the messaging problems but also giving some oomph to having friends at all.
Thanks for the update Danny. Just a minor rant/observation, we will keep on sphinning. :)
