Use Wordpress.org not Wordpress.com if you want to customize/optimize it.
I was just having fun with one last night for my directory, hacked it big time, no dates in the URLs, no categories, no WP archives, H1's on the post pages, no post feeds (these cause supplementals), no duplicate content in sight, I'm just going to hand make a monthly archive with links to the posts for each month.
Well, I killed this once simply because we already had two stories go hot about Matt's talk. I give up :)
http://sphinn.com/story/1101 covers the other story, had a link to this in it, plus links to a third story.
