If I’m not linking to your website, and you think I should, you have to explain why. This sounds stupidly simple, but this principle is the foundation of every link request. If you manage to do this correctly, you might end up with a link.

The essence of a lot of stupid link requests is "your site is great, and I need links from great sites, so link to me".How convincing. :-)

@sza: The sad reality is sometimes that actually works especially with things like Volunteer Organizations, your own web design clients, etc Not everyone understands the internet nor knows the value of their website and/or content. Spam exists because it works.
