The idea behind SphinnCon is pretty simple. Many are familiar with our SMX: Search Marketing Expo conference series. Those aren't going away, but we also know that we can't bring a traditional two or three day event to all the cities in the world that people wish for. SphinnCon is designed to be "low impact," which means low-cost plus a time-friendly half-day format. We expect to do a panel or two at a SphinnCon, followed by ample networking time.
SphinnCon is especially designed to help those in a particular area get together with each other. To that end, where would you like to see SphinnCon happen in 2008? List your favorite location in the comments below -- and if others agree, vote up those comments!
Our first event will happen in Israel on Feb. 5, and you can learn more about it here. Search Engine Land news editor Barry Schwartz is heading over for a visit, and thought doing a get-together made sense. So that's going to be the inaugural SphinnCon, with many more to follow.
Whoo hoo! This is exciting!
How's about one in Bimingham, England? We're the second city but London get's all the glory. ;-)
st paul - minneapolis would be a great stop. lots of search marketing folks around the midwest. :)
Biloxi, MS. It needs visitors to bring some life back to the Katrina-devastated area. There are casinos and beaches, so fun is available. And it would be a fun place for all the Southern US folks to get together.
Some place warm, florida is nice all year. And we don't worry about snow. I would recommend it being outside of hurricane season as you never know with those things.
The Desert...Scottsdale Arizona :)
@northrock, good idea. We just need to get them in one place. It's like herding cats. :)
Uh... My place ? :P
Great idea guys. I think you should also target one in Pennsylvania, maybe the Pittsburgh or Philadelphia area. Philly would be an easy meeting point for many people (D.C., NJ, Delaware, etc.).
+1 Pennsylvania
New York City..... I love New York!!
Lee and Northrock have the plan, Minneapolis!
@sphinndr - Agreed! Miami anyone?
London please :)
Great idea. Atlanta!
Atlanta's not bad since i'm in Knoxville, TN. I can't go to far gotta save that money up for SMX Advanced in Seattle ;)
Yes London please ;)
Amsterdam would be a nice spot :)
@ MrThePlague - I second the idea for a con in Phoenix/Scottsdale! bring the con to the 24/7/365 resort town :) please
Very exciting Danny! In Canada, Toronto, Montreal (definitely Montreal), Vancouver or Calgary, and perhaps Halifax. So west coast, east coast, central (English), and central (French). That should about cover it.
How about Dallas, TX??? It centrally located....beautiful weather (except August)....plenty of space....
COME ON Y'ALL!!
I must be the only Sphinner in Denver :P
Ukraine, South Africa, Brazil, and Thailand, just some places I'd like to visit.
Scottsdale, Arizona is good since its easy to access from many locations (great airport).
I'll suggest Los Angeles (since I'm here) and will happily host such an event.
Can't turn down New York City, and while I'm thinking coastal let's include Seattle.
Is it possible this can ever be a weekend event? I would love that.
I'd go to one in Dallas. Or Atlanta.
Wingnut I with you. How about we make it Vail, CO and we can hit the slopes.
I live in Virginia so I'm with Pratt. Philly is a great central locale to Virginia, D.C., NJ, Delaware...
awesome barry - i'm so happy you are getting to do this! I loved doing the local, more intimate SEWlive events, this will be even better.
I swear, my New Year's resolution is to finally set up the SLC SEM professional group, i've had a domain and been meaning to for years now. The group here is is easly 50+ people.
danny & I have talked many times about the 'retreat' style events - so Josey, wingnut - anytime you want to ski ... I"M IN!!
This is so exciting. Our own Danny Sullivan conference here in Israel.
Barry, thank you sooo much for getting this thing going, I think the conference is going to be a blast. Judging by the response of the israeli blogosphere, we will have to get armed guards at the doors to stop the unregistered form coming in. Well, at least we are not lacking guards in Israel.
Branko
How about Portland?
America's finest city: San Diego, California!
SALT Lake City or BOISE would be fine and dandy!
im with thenanny. NYC all the way, major airports all around and good food. I will be doing a sushi joint crawl next time a conference is in town, so this could be a good chance to eat at the places that are not on the standard tourist map while talking some SEM/SEO
Back to VEGAS BABY!
Kelowna British Columbia (Canada) -> Wine and Golf Country!
Yes I third that- NYC
Lee and Northrock have the plan, Minneapolis!
- h to tha izzo!
Frozen Seo 2008
How about RENO?
Close enough for most in No. California area to drive to as long as it's not during the rainy/snowy season in the Sierras. Not only is it MUCH cheaper than Vegas, many hotels offer rooms for FREE or less than $50 for a day if you plan it right. It could be a nice conference day with an additional day to stay and play in Reno ;)
Planned in advance on the right days of the week, most people can get cheap tickets for less than $200 round trip on Southwest to Reno from most states around Nevada so combine that with cheap or free rooms, it's a helluva deal!
I'll add another vote for Toronto! Montreal would be decent option, but I wouldn't go for a 1/2 day event.
Bring SphinnCon to Toronto and SMX to Montreal?
Sounds a lot like the Search Engine Watch Live networking events that elisabethosmeloski used to hold. Great idea! Danny will you actually be at the first ever SphinnCon event in Israel or will Barry be leading the charge? It's not clear in your post or on the event page itself.
Fun to see you at SES Chicago, thanks again for contributing and making it a success.
Well Denver would be okay - but ASPEN would be better - esp. since I'm only 1/2 hr away! Fun skiing time!
Boston? Combo event w/ SEMNE?
Seeing as how I'm in Glendale, AZ, Scottsdale would be cool because it's only a sneeze away. Plus everyone is invited to stay in my 2 bedroom apartment ;)
Nashville is a great central location.
I think Boston would have a good turnout.
AMERICAS FINEST CITY ---> SAN DIEGO!!!!! SUNNY / WARM (OR LA)
I'm in Maryland, so would attend in DC, Philly, or NYC.
Me three for America's finest city, Sunny Sun Diego, California!
Branson. Yee-Haw!
Salt Lake City, Utah. You know you need to.
Me 4 America's Finest and Kickass City.... SAN Diego You can finally steal the official sphinn license plate!
http://sphinn.com/story/4197
Cincinatti, Louisville or Nashville. I'm there.
THIS IS AWESOME! We independents have a hard time with shows like SES where the tab can easily exceed $4k costs + lost billable time. But I do want to stay in touch with all the Sphinners!
I think 1/2 day on the most important topics + a major networking event would several times a year would be my "ideal" (Plus I'd go to SMX Advanced, of course.)
w00t!
Sunny Sun Diego, California!
ahhh, Danny you need to claim that licence plate before it's gone!
Let's see, the weather is best in San Diego. The SEO Comminty is awesome and Danny you can stay at my house by the beach. Is there really any other choice?
The weather in San Diego is great all year around, there are wonderful (and inexpensive) places to stay all around the city, the beaches are great, and, as organizer for the SEO Meetup, I can help organize the event!
Albany New York. We're within 3 hours of NYC, Boston, Montreal
Long, long ago, SES had an annual conference in Boston. I never made it there, and I've regretted it ever since. Considering our fair city's important role in the birth of the interwebs, I think it's only natural that somebody bring a conference back to Bosstown.
That being said, I like Jeff's idea of Montreal, too. Great town, that one.
San Diego or LA sounds good to me
Dallas sounds good to me.
Has anyone mentioned that there would be no better place for this event than San Diego?!
Although, if i was to vote away from my home town, JakeFields' Lake Tahoe would be good too. We can have a big'ol snowball fight!
Vancouver. I'll host the BBQ.
Brisbane, Australia. Plus, I'm due for a visit back home, so South African Sphinn would be cool with me :)
Danny you totally need to havew one in orlando, this way you'll have an excuse to go to the real Disney theme park not the practice one you go to now ;-)
I'm in Virginia and not really interested in going to Philly, the DC metro area has plenty of interest already. Simon Heseltine and Debra Mastaler have already had some well attended SEO meetups in Northern Virginia, and the interest and industry is already there.
Salt Lake City. We've got a thriving community of search marketers here, why not?
Northern Virginia area!! Easy drive from Philly/Del/MD/WVA/ Richmond and the thriving metropolis of Williamsburg. AOL is there plus a ton of big tech companies and it's a 2.5 hour drive down here to Busch Gardens. ;) And a quick plug - we're doing a NoVa Meetup Dec 29 http://searchenginetigers.com/2007/12/yes-virginia-there-is-a-sem-meetup-event.html
San Diego is the place to be! It feels like home to me!
Agree with planetc1, would like one in south africa or thailand, throughougly loved both places
I'm with Burgo - how about heading up to Brisbane after SMX Sydney Australia in April :)
Boulder, Colorado. It's a great place for a more informal get together and we'll give you some spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. And I believe a few people you know quite well live here.
I'm with SphinnDr (nice name!): Miami/Ft Lauderdale...outside of hurricane season nov-june
I agree with Joost: Amsterdam sounds great :)
Cinn/Kentucky baby!
i love the idea of you doing these in areas where the big conferences don't already go. some of us don't work for big companies who can afford to send us out of town for a high dollar conference.
dalllas, dallas, dallas depserately needs this! i've never been to a conference and know many others who would love to have a conference here in town.
