Sphinns a more sophisticated community on the whole than Digg or many others in terms of what gets Sphunn. Jane Copland at SEOmoz (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-things-we-didnt-have-back-in-my-day) pointed to Reddit, where an in-depth piece got 40 some votes and a squirrel caught in a bird-feeder got 400+, for example.

I mostly vote for technical or content-led stuff that will help people better set up their sites.
I subscribe to the Whats New RSS feed, so the choice of what I click through and read is based just on the title. If Im interested in the subject, Ill read the article. Ill sphinn it if its a) good advice, b) new information to me or c) thoughtful, even if I disagree with it.I only occasionally receive requests from other members -- on average about once a week -- and Ill read the article, but wont sphinn it unless it falls into one or more of the categories listed above. And I guess you could say Im relatively active here. Up until a month or two ago I was in the top 20 on the "Hot Sphinners" page. I think Im around #30 now.
I try to sphinn something thats original, new, or I never heard of. Top 10 lists of wordpress plugins or ways to get on diggs front page, not so much, but a blog Ive never seen that ran a well thought out test with the results surely. New and innovative ideas get my sphinn. I used to sphinn a lot more, but as time wears on Im getting choosier and wasting less time. One think I look for is comments, if no-one is interested enough in the article to comment, then it probably doesnt deserve a sphinn either. In this matter, even submissions that I may disagree with get sphunn if not just to inspire more conversation.I dont mind the fact that just about every seoMOZ and SEL article gets sphunn here 10 minutes after publication Ill probably read them anyway in the feeds, but I sure wont sphinn a blog post from someone pointing out that Rand or Danny wrote a new article. Ill Sphinn the source not the one thats just pointing to the source, unless they have a unique take on it. If so, the word content better be more than, " I agree with Danny when he says xxxx in this post xxxx"Oh, and just about anything from Sebastian as his posts take days to write and they are always full of information.
@ g1 - Nice to see other people enjoying the technical points.@ Qwerty - Thats a pretty good summary bud. Yeah, I remember you being on the Hot Sphinners cuz I was gonna profile you in that top 20 post :) "a) good advice, b) new information to me or c) thoughtful, even if I disagree with it." I like that. Makes sense to me. Gonna check out things youve sphunn later to get a better idea, but anyways nice way to lay out your criteria.@ John - I hadnt thought of the comments thing, but now you mention it, I have to say its a good indicator. That said, some stuff Ill post gets comments but goes nowhere in the votes because its not always up to the standards of "a) good advice, b) new information to me or c) thoughtful,"BTW, Im also a big fan of Sebastians writing. Incidentally, I should be posting an interview I did with him to Youmoz soon. I agree also that its annoying when people submit their posts linking to Danny or Rand or whoever. Submit the original!
Thanks guys :) Compliments like yours get me to the keyboard ...
