Sphinn’s a more sophisticated community on the whole than Digg or many others in terms of what gets Sphunn. Jane Copland at SEOmoz (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-things-we-didnt-have-back-in-my-day) pointed to Reddit, where an in-depth piece got 40 some votes and a squirrel caught in a bird-feeder got 400+, for example.

So: What do you Sphinn and why? Also, if you could give some indication of how active you are on Sphinn, that would help us appreciate your answers better.

I mostly vote for technical or content-led stuff that will help people better set up their sites.

I subscribe to the What’s New RSS feed, so the choice of what I click through and read is based just on the title. If I’m interested in the subject, I’ll read the article. I’ll sphinn it if it’s a) good advice, b) new information to me or c) thoughtful, even if I disagree with it.I only occasionally receive requests from other members -- on average about once a week -- and I’ll read the article, but won’t sphinn it unless it falls into one or more of the categories listed above. And I guess you could say I’m relatively active here. Up until a month or two ago I was in the top 20 on the "Hot Sphinners" page. I think I’m around #30 now.

I try to sphinn something that’s original, new, or I never heard of. Top 10 lists of wordpress plugins or ways to get on digg’s front page, not so much, but a blog I’ve never seen that ran a well thought out test with the results surely. New and innovative ideas get my sphinn. I used to sphinn a lot more, but as time wears on I’m getting choosier and wasting less time. One think I look for is comments, if no-one is interested enough in the article to comment, then it probably doesn’t deserve a sphinn either. In this matter, even submissions that I may disagree with get sphunn if not just to inspire more conversation.I don’t mind the fact that just about every seoMOZ and SEL article get’s sphunn here 10 minutes after publication I’ll probably read them anyway in the feeds, but I sure won’t sphinn a blog post from someone pointing out that Rand or Danny wrote a new article. I’ll Sphinn the source not the one that’s just pointing to the source, unless they have a unique take on it. If so, the word content better be more than, " I agree with Danny when he says xxxx in this post xxxx"Oh, and just about anything from Sebastian as his posts take days to write and they are always full of information.

@ g1 - Nice to see other people enjoying the technical points.@ Qwerty - That’s a pretty good summary bud. Yeah, I remember you being on the Hot Sphinners cuz I was gonna profile you in that top 20 post :) "a) good advice, b) new information to me or c) thoughtful, even if I disagree with it." I like that. Makes sense to me. Gonna check out things you’ve sphunn later to get a better idea, but anyways nice way to lay out your criteria.@ John - I hadn’t thought of the comments thing, but now you mention it, I have to say it’s a good indicator. That said, some stuff I’ll post gets comments but goes nowhere in the votes because it’s not always up to the standards of "a) good advice, b) new information to me or c) thoughtful,"BTW, I’m also a big fan of Sebastian’s writing. Incidentally, I should be posting an interview I did with him to Youmoz soon. I agree also that it’s annoying when people submit their posts linking to Danny or Rand or whoever. Submit the original!
