Getting onto the front page of Digg has always been notoriously difficult, so I realized a while ago that chasing the Digg vote for an online marketing blog wasn’t a good strategy.
But with Sphinn, it is a different matter. Here is a social bookmarking site that should respond very well to the types of posts I want to submit - particularly SEO and online marketing. These people read the same blogs as I do, so it was a no-brainer to throw myself into Sphinn, especially as a post can go hot at one tenth of the numbers required at Digg.
Yet, try as I might, I can’t seem to break through the wall. Posts that feel to me as if they should definitely punch through languish with single-figure Sphinns. All the time I wait monitoring RSS feeds to leap on the latest post by a hot blogger seems to do me no good, but the guy who submits a different post of theirs reaps front page gold.

yeah, and add bruceclay.com, seobook.com, and of course seomoz.org. Actually, just mention Rand Fishkin and you’re golden.

Congrats on your first time! I can relate - stuff that I think is important doesn’t get much attention but other (often controversial) stuff does. Too bad that the important but apparently less attention-grabbing stuff doesn’t float to the top... but (now) I understand that’s the nature of the game here in social media. Welcome, Jonathon.
Woohoo! Well, thanks to everyone’s fine efforts, this post went hot at 3.59pm, probably about 2am for me. And the Sphinns are still coming in. As an experiment in generating my own membership if the front-page illuminati it certainly worked, with some fine comments, supportive emails and great feedback. Mixx was the only site that seemed to have a problem with this post by voting it down. It even generated a few Diggs. S0 which site should be my next target? Hmmm. In a few days when things have settled, I’ll write up tthe experience in it’s own post as there are many observations to be had here. But as I am extremely hungover from the work Christmas party, I’m thinking there won’t be any meaningful posts today... Thanks again one and all and may the big fat man in the red coat bring you all your own Matt Cutt’s action figure.
