Great article! As local search sites proliferate, SMBs have got to take advantage of the opportunity to manage their information online, no to mention take advantage of each site's offering, which are often similar, but sometimes unique.

Here at Kudzu.com, we’re in the process of expanding nationwide (we originally launched as an Atlanta site, then expanded to a few additional markets last year...now we're expanding nationally), and we’re offering FREE Premium-level online profiles (a $900 value) for small service businesses in these new markets…through 2008. A Premium Profile lets small businesses provide detailed marketing information, web site links, email links, photos, videos (!), coupons/deals, credentials, and more, about their business to their local target market.

Good piece.

We are constantly encouraging the businesses we work with to keep an accurate up-to-date profile. It's surprisingly hard.

I'd also add that businesses should try and write unique content for each website they are listed on rather than writing something once and then copy and pasting it across every site they join up too. The same goes for photo content too.

Daniel, that's great advice - keeping the description unique on each separate directory could help reduce chances of their listings getting supressed in SERPs due to duplication reduction efforts.

Updating core pieces of info like hours of operation and payment types can really help avoid customers getting nasty surprises later.
