Lol come on! Who hasn't Googled themselves?
The question is, which one is worse, touching or googling one's self?
I think it's important to Google your own name, you never know what you will find. This might be important before going to an interview for a new job, just to be ready for any questions you might get. A lot of people might be googling your name :-)
But what I find more interesting is that a lot of people are actually googling www.google.com (they are trying to find google) :-)
Ya know, Googling yourself is crucial for your OWN online brand reputation management. Yes, we're each a brand and there may be a time we may have to combat negative dialect in the SERPs.
Maybe the real question should be; who has Yahoo'd, MSN'd, or even Ask'd themselves? There's a joke there, but I'll let it go :)
I sometimes Google myself ... when I'm alone ... in the dark!
PS: This is the most idiotic post title I've ever read. It sounds so XXX ... And BTW ... us ... Europeans ... know about the Americans' lack of Googling and self-compensation as you mention it here.
Jordan,
I here this more and more in the office and around friends
"hey have you typed your name into Google?"
This brings up one of my conversations I had with a good friend down at Pubcon a few weeks ago, Jeff Smith from Brand Titan tossed out a few new buzzwords I have heard about but never really knew there was services for such as Search Engine Reputation Repair and Management.
I found this interesting since we all think of just our personal names in this topic however most of us have to also protect our company when doing SEO so this goes even further than that into corporations and employees working for these companies what happens if someone gets fired and starts some bad press online. The other direction of personal Goggling jumps into politics, we are seeing even more websites popup with Youtube posts and other forms of media.
Some Employers even say they search for the applicant online first before the interview to see what has been said about that person. This could hurt an applicant if things had been said false or misleading, slander. How does one clean that from the net?
Another thing to think about when self promotion is the scary part Google MAPS.
William Rock,
In addition, some employers even use social sites, like MySpace, to research employees prior to interview.
Utah,
These are all good points. As someone in social media, we should all be wise enough to MySpace research who we are interviewing with, and make our own profiles private. Yes? In addition, having 2 profiles (your personal and your professional) and making the personal private, they will be fished into seeing what you want them to see.
It's not wise to mix business with pleasure. Pleasure must stay locked and hidden away.
As SEO's we should also be wise enough to create ego sites. Heck we can create press releases highlighting how great we are. I can be my own #1 fan. But this is a whole different ball game. It gets messy on this field.
Woah, jeffquip, you just threw my universe out of alignment! I was happy in the knowledge that 8 of the 10 results on Google's first SERP (and 7 on Yahoo) are for me, me, me--and then I went and checked Ask and MSN, and they're all, "Who are you??"
Ask is especially brutal; most of my egotistical SEO (SEgO?) is through my blog, which doesn't rate a mention there (though other blogs that blogroll me do show up, strangely).
Guess I'm not as fabulous as I imagined. And I have a lot to learn :-)
