While this method is nothing new, it is very tried and true. The one thing that consistently brings in large amounts of traffic and garners backlinks in the process is the creation of a good tutorial.

Tutorials are always a great traffic-booster.

When I first started doing freelance work I had a few tutorials up... now, five years later, I'm still finding people linking to the (now non-existent) tutorials.

I have worked in this way and wrote a tutorial on CVS integrated in Eclipse. I assume it sends me lots of visits.
