While some people realized affiliate marketing has has slowly been changing for some time now many others missed the memo, or are on are sailing a ship of blissful ignorance up a famous river in Africa. For those few people I hope the announcement of Google Knols last week serves as a wakeup call.

Content has been king in my mind since about 2004 when I had a handful of "thin" affiliate sites peak, then slowly crash and burn as Google rolled out new algorithms.  That was the beginning of the end for thin affiliate sites.11th hour?  I thought that was a few years ago, but otherwise I agree completely.

*everything* in search changes constantly. "thin affiliate sites" will remain known as "thin affiliate sites", but maybe they will now stay in the lab until they no longer qualify for that moniker... simply because they won’t be profitable enough as thin sites. They only ever survived because of opportunity, so no surprise they cease to perform as the search space matures.But *strategically*, the thin affiliate site is still quite viable and I expect that space to grow substantially over  the next 3 years. A low-content-maintenance, centrally managed (content wise) web publishing system is of great interest to an increasing number of companies. Now, how to make that work in Google is the (to be increasingly well-funded) SEO question. Sound familiar? Yeah.. it’s the same question we’ve always been working on. Go figure. Now set your signal to noise ratio hard limiter so those  affiliate and search marketing blogs talking about ’the death of thin affiliate sites" drop below your attention line. You don’t need to read that. Look for the ones that say "how to rank thin affiliate sites in Google". Oh. That’s right. Nobody publishes those SEO Secrets. Why would they?

Granted, I am new to this... but if Wikipedia didn’t kill ’thin affiliate sites’ why would Google Knols? Especially if our thin affiliates leverage search engine preference for navigational queries...or am I being newbish here?
