I know from a readers perspective, I rather a blog have a niche focus.  When I find a blog that pertains to one of my interests I will add it to my rss reader.  Right now I don’t have a single multi topic blog in my rss reader.

I have one blog, with a fairly broad centerline. The thing that’s interesting are the numbe of people who visit my blog for OTHER reasons, and then find out... oh, this guy is a pretty well known and experienced search marketer... I think I’ll tell "so and so insert company name here" about him.  Then I get a call.  Last week I got a comment "I spent 2 hours on your blog"Those folks would probably have never been found inside my website no matter how well I rank for search marketing queries - they wouldn’t be searching for me in that context.
