I have been thinking about this concept of SEO and Internet Marketing being something I think must be taught and discussed. Ultimately, the industry lies within conversation and apprenticeship.

I was 1st given my look into SEM by Paul Allen. He taught a internet entrepreneurship class at Utah Valley University. That was more conversation. I have had mentors and am currently a mentor for my team at OrangeSoda, Inc. The neat thing our team is very much into learning from each other, so sometimes I am the protege. We really have a great team here.I do know several people who do every thing by trial and error. Testing, and testing some more. 200 servers, mass changes and awesome crawler and rank tracking. But this could also be considered a conversation perhaps. Truly though I would also have to add the scientific method to your list.

@BartGibby- I definitely feel the best way to work is with a team who is all trained the same way. This will make projects move quicker and more smoothly.  Trial and Error is OK, but is not a good idea if you have deadlines and important clients.Btw-  I LOVE the name OrangeSoda, Inc.

Thanks Emily! We are fond of it too. My coworkers got on my back for not adding a link to OrangeSoda.com. Those silly guys, my comment wasn’t about our company per say. It was about SEO apprenticeship in general. How I think you are right about conversation, and apprenticeship. But I added something to the discussion. Which was the use of the scientific method.Which again Emily, you and I have created our own conversation / apprenticeship here. both learning from each other. Our discourse community may be small, but its intelligent :). I don’t waste lame promo links in a good SEM industry conversation like this. Those are better used on forums, blogs, etc. where our target market lies.So eat that co-workers! But I will add a link to our OrangeSoda, Inc. Partner Page :)

When I am looking for someone to hire onto my team I don’t look for an impressive SEO resume.  I want to know they have a strong background in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and we teach them how we do SEO as a company.  This has turned out to give us the best results.

@sphinndrVery true. the way I understand it, I was the first SEO hired into Vizergy. Everyone before me was brought from deisgn fields, and trained in the ways of SEO, and I think we have ourselves a really nice team becuase of the versatility. I’m a horrible designer, but sometimes something needs to be tweaked. It’s easy to rely on my peers who understand the SEO implications, and can make it work on a site.

I prefer to distinguish between website design and SEO, so I define SEO as what has to do with pushing a website to top rankings and exclude from it the design prerequisites. I have argued therefore in Is SEO a Technical Profession?  that, unlike website design,  SEO does not consist in a body of knowledge that can be passed on. The shared or potentially shared knowledge is only about 5% of what we would like to know but are prevented from by Google and the other SEs. SEO is really a practice of decision-making in conditions of minimal information. Which can be learnt only as an apprentice to a master, unless you are able to invent the theory and practice all by yourself.
