Jeff - you bring up a great point, social marketing in hopes to gain traffic can be disappointing.  People need to understand that social marketing is also about being in the right spot at the right time.

Spot on, Jeff! As with all addictions, if you look at the results in the cold light of day, you have to think "Was it really worth it?"

Not at all Dave ... just wanted to throw you a bone. I view it as a tremendous opportunity. The challenge; figure out how to monetize social media traffic for all clients. It can be done ... I’m certain!

I think it helps if you have your goals set out clear. Do you want exposure, links, RSS signup, expand your email list, gain online friends, cause  blog buzz, etc. etc. Besides that you also have to know how to handle the traffic you didn’t ask for. Do you want to show a custom message to people coming from Digg? A targeted call to action to people from Reddit?Social media promotion just for the heck of promotion is like doing SEO just for the heck of it. It’s the "so what?" effect :)
