Before I became a full time SEO I assumed that all web designers at least took things into consideration when they built a site. Since - well, Ive been shocked out of that assumption!
Ive been suprised recently by the lack of SEO knowledge shown by some designers/developers. Im not saying it applies to every designer Ive worked with but it does apply to concerning majority. It can be really frustrating, but hey - I cant design for toffee, so well carry on regardless ;)
I work closely with designers everyday and most of them are clueless into the world of SEO. This concept works both ways in most cases.
Great article. Ive felt this way for years. In fact, we wont take a project if the client wont accept Search Engine Friendly design of their new website. SEO should be taught in college (at least to some level) as part of a web design degree.
On the other hand, in order to be truly effective, I believe SEOs should have a certain level of knowledge in web design and development, as well.
SEO isnt something to start doing once the website has gone live, It is something that starts on Day One of the website planning. It involves URL format, site structure, internal navigation planning, upsell link formats, even which fields to include in the database (such as for title and meta description), and a great many other things.
Coming from working with many small business people, this is a very hot topic. I agree with SEOdisco, too.You have to have some experience with dev and design. I see SEO as a long term approach to any client work. If you dont educate the client about SEO, someone else will, and you will lose that client in the long run. Under promise and over deliver.
I just wish they would at least teach the bare bones basics in college courses.
SEO Is Not An Option, Its A Requirement!See how people call themselves SMART SEO and copy stuff from here and there! Is somebody looking here and there for such plagiarist?
