Great article!
Enjoy anonymity it while it lasts because lots of websites are blocking proxy servers for a variety of reasons such as Google crawls through them and creates the situation called proxy hijacking, scrapers use proxy servers to scrape, and others use them to launch DDoS attacks.
Besides, while you are at work you should be working, not trying to figure out how to surf the web anonymously, sheesh.
Oh Incredbill, thats incredibly presumptuous no? Maybe theyre trying to avoid personalized results? haha in either case it will be a sad day when anonymity on the internet is dead. Thats what makes the internet so wonderful. There are a few problems sure but internet is our last truly free outlet. The news is controlled so what will happen to liberty when the internet is censored.
One word: proxy bots. Automation is nice.
(That page is hard to look at, so many ads...)
tor and vidalia are nice, especially with the firefox plugins, but wicked wicked slow
@watkin31: Anyone can get anonymity online at any time just hitting any kiosk or internet cafe, even the local library or using a proxy from home. I think you're missing the point that I'm not against proxies, I'm against proxy ABUSE as a webmaster so it's the proxy abusers that will ultimately make them useless because webmasters won't put up with that crap.
If the free internet wants to stay free then the proxy operators need to clean up their act and stop search engines and scrapers from crawling the proxies and maybe the webmasters will ease up.
One thing to note about proxy servers is that whoever has set up that proxy server may also be tracking your every move, such as passwords you enter into sites you access while using it. Maybe creating a proxy server on your own site would be the safest way to surf the net.
Also, proxies are easy as hell to detect. Most real social news sites can detect them easy as pie.
Yup, as mentioned above any proxy can phish your data and you give it up willingly.
