SEOs should learn as much as possible about almost everything -- not just programming. I'd say that the more an SEO knows about public relations, social media, programming, product development, and even things like human resources, business management and so forth, the better s/he'll be at being an SEO. That's especially true if you're an SEO inside a large company.
