GiorgosK writes: ...looking at the top clicked queries on the 7th row there is a search term that brought in 4% of the traffic even though the site’s position is #131 for that phrase !!!! More traffic than phrases that the site holds first page ranking !!! What does that mean ?? Well in my book it means that this particular phrase has so much traffic that even the not so well positioned sites get some.1. This result is so unusual that it should be verified before being accepted. For instance, is it absolutely sure that the search and clickthrough figures for the phrases in the two lists do not include the figures of their longtail variations?2. We shouldn’t forget that the data on our logfiles are biased towards what our website is successfully optimized for. What brings us most traffic is therefore not what would bring us most traffic if we had higher rankings for more popular search queries.3. And we shouldn’t also forget that the most popular search queries on Google are perhaps out of reach considering the budget assigned. Spreading keywords among internal pages is, in competitive arenas (and anyone’s might become one soon too), a silly practice of webmasters used to noncompetitive arenas. Perhaps an inner page well-optimized for a certain search query will not get the top ranking the homepage would have.4. Keyword research is therefore not simply looking for the most popular keywords but looking for the most popular keywords that you can bring to top rankings versus the competition within the given budget.

It is possible that you got clicks for that query on one special day when, for some reason, your site happened to be much higher in the rankings for a limited time. Or in a country-specific or otherwise modified or restricted SERP.You can be almost 100% sure that you did not receive 4% of your top clicks while showing up at #131 for a query.I have 4% values for ridiculously long tail queries combined with #150+ positions (in one case outside the top 300 :-)). I would never believe I should optimize for those words.

Well sza, the remedy is to analyze reports for last month or so.

I have optimized for those words and they keep on bringing more traffic and I am climbing up in the serp positions actually and that is the only reason I wrote this post.It was not a scientific discovery after all.  It is only a suggestion for people and a possibility to explore.
