The problem with such lists of tips is that people get the impression the SEO is a technical matter and you can own the knowledge this profession requires by learning the whole list, implementing it and repeating the implementation to gain experience. In short, they get the false impression that SEO is something that is done to the website.
But SEO is something you do in order to get at least Top 10 rankings for the most popular search queries your client can afford. It is target-oriented and therefore achievement-oriented. So SEO is something you do against the other SEOs competing with you on the same extremely limited in number rankings. By being smarter, harder-working and more ingenious. So SEO is about excellence. And if you're driven by the 20% effort / 80% results wisdom it's not for you. Unless you're lucky enough to service only low-competition websites.
What's the problem with the 123 tips? Many of them specify how to do this or that well rather than sloppily or without thought. But if 123 SEO workers follow the tips to the letter, optimizing for the same search query, who will be the Top 10? Or the Top One?
emanuelh, thank you for your comment and I understand what you're trying to say. Indeed, doing what everybody else is doing, following the crowd is definitely not enough, you have to always ask yourself: what is my edge over the competition?
This article covers both issues: on the one hand, I provide basic SEO tips (in other words, the foundation for your future SEO efforts such as on-page SEO), but I also refer to aspects which can help you develop an edge over the competition (such as creating content people gladly link to and, let's face it, it seems that fewer and fewer people focus on providing actual value to the Web, as a lot of webmasters prefer to search for a quick-fix or an easy path to great rankings).
